ATN ThOR 4 640 2.5-25X50 Smart HD Thermal Riflescope
From Night Vision Guys about ATN ThOR HD 640 2.5-25x50 Thermal Rifle Scope TIWSTH643A
In 2016 ATN took yet another novel approach to thermal scopes. Using some of the technology developed for the X-Sight scope and BinoX binoculars in 2014 and 2015, they redesigned the entire ThOR line to be based on Obsidian "T" II Thermal cores instead of the FLIR cores used previously. Results seem to be impressive. The new ATN ThOR HD thermal scopes pack a ton of modern technologically advanced features. How well these new cores will hold up compared to the proven FLIR cores used in the past remains to be seen, but the 3 year body / 10 year core warranty ATN offers puts our concerns to rest.
This particular model featuring 2.5-25x progressive zoom with a 50mm objective lens is ideal for mid range hunting. Competitively priced and packed with features, this ATN thermal scope is probably the ideal choice for most hunters as it covers the standard 75-300 yard hunting range.

Thermal Imaging
Please note that most thermal devices are built per order. It may take 3-5 days or more for your order to ship. If timely shipping is important to you, please, contact us to verify availability prior to ordering.
Thermal devices can produce various types of images. Some are color others are monochrome. In either case change in shade or color indicates temperature differences.
Here is how thermal imaging devices work...
A special lens focuses the infrared light emitted by all of the objects in view.
The focused light is scanned by a phased array of infrared-detector elements. The detector elements create a very detailed temperature pattern called a thermogram. It only takes about one-thirtieth of a second for the detector array to obtain the temperature information to make the thermogram. This information is obtained from several thousand points in the field of view of the detector array.
The thermogram created by the detector elements is translated into electric impulses.
The impulses are sent to a signal-processing unit, a circuit board with a dedicated chip that translates the information from the elements into data for the display.
The signal-processing unit sends the information to the display, where it appears as various colors depending on the intensity of the infrared emission. The combination of all the impulses from all of the elements creates the image.
There are a few key Manufacturers when it comes to thermal imaging.
ATN: produce such well knows devies as ThOR-HD thermal scope, BINOX-THD thermal binoculars, and OTS-HD thermal monocular.
FLIR/Armasight: the largest maker of consumer level thermal products is well knows for their full product line. Zeus thermal scopes, Q14 and Scout monoculars, Helios and Scout binoculars and many more.
Pulsar: a very popular brand for digital night vision and thermal imaging. Key products include Pulsar Trail and Apex thermal scopes and Pulsar Helion and Quantum thermal monoculars.
Seek: mobile device mounted thermal cameras are the main products of this brand.
Delivery Time and Manufacturing Process for ATN THOR-HD 640 2.5-25x50 Thermal Rifle Scope:
Most of our manufacturers do not keep products like ATN THOR-HD 640 2.5-25x50 Thermal Rifle Scope assembled on the shelf. Night Vision tubes are kept separate from the body of the unit. When the order is placed, the manufacturer starts the order processing and assembly process which includes the following:
- Order processing - we collect all the necessary information including address and phone numbers. We also make sure that our customer ordered the correct product for their needs and that the product can be exported by US law to the country of destination. In some cases a signed export compliance form is required.
- QC - in this step the manufacturer will inspect all individual parts which will be used to assemble the night vision device for any defects.
- Production & Assembly - during production, all the parts are put together. Night Vision tubes in inserted into the body of the unit and all the complex electronics for the device are connected. This process takes place in a special lab called the "clean room" as even a small speckle of dust can cause undesired optical effect.
- QA - one the night vision device is assembled, it goes through a rigorous testing process to make sure it meets all the expected specifications and all parts function as expected. For this most manufacturers have a special "dark room" designed to allow testing of the units without causing incidental damage to the night vision tube by exposure to bright light.
- Packaging - this is a key process as well. In most case your night vision device will be shipped to you directly from the manufacturer but sometimes needs to be sent to us first. In either case items need to be packaged securely to avoid any kind of damage during transportation.
- Shipping - as described above items will most of the time ship from the manufacturer. For most domestic orders (unless shipping to POB or AFB) a premium shipper like FedEx or UPS will be used.
Only by following the above steps can we along with our manufacturers bring you - our customer - night vision products of highest quality, However as you can understand the above process can take several days to complete. For example if your device fails QA, the entire process restarts. Also at QC stage a manufacturer may realize that the tube they have in stock has a defect and a replacement tube needs to be ordered. Due to the complexity of this process, it is prudent to expect 3-4 business days for production and handling of the purchased device. Keep in mind that this process is designed to guarantee your satisfaction with the night vision device of your choice. It occasionally possible to expedite the process for urgent orders but addional fees or other restrictions may apply.

I own the night!
One word, unbelievable! What you see through the scope during the day is exactly what you will see at night. Ever watched bats fly about at night in absolute darkness, or the thermal reflection of trees on water? Ever watched deer feed at 400 yards in pitch blackness? Do you even know how many animals are out at night? Sure your headlights illuminate at few deer... what you can't see are the othe dozen that are either turned away or bedding down. This scope is a game changer! Animals loose the fear of humans at night. I've stood still down wind of deer and had them stalk me! Fog!?! What fog? The only downside of thermal is that you can't see through glass. When looking at glass you will see your thermal reflection. I can go on and on. The scope has so far functioned flawlessly. I have multiple gun profiles loaded in the system, and switching between them is easy. Because it is a thermal sensor using a computer attached to a Tv screen, ATN corp is constantly improving the software to better augment the awesome hardware! If you have the money and are thinking about buying this scope, do, you will not be disappointed! Michael Williamsburg, Virginia

Question
What is the frame rate for this unit 30hz of 60hz?
From eddie on Mar 12, 2016
Answer
The thermal scope itself is capable of 50hz, however the initial software version which the unit will come with will be at 30hz. ATN is planning to have a software update later in the year to activate 50hz capability.
Question
There's been some confusing discussions on the Texas hunting forum about the New ThOr-HD thermal scopes. The confusion is with the "core" of the new line of ThOr-HD thermals. Is the below statement correct? are there two separate components or is the thermal sensor built in the Obsidian core. 1. Obsidian core:(Computer) "The Obsidian Core is a highly specialized computer that is designed to run a suite of sensors and crunch huge files in a blink of an eye." (operating at a billion cycles per second) 2. Thermal Sensor: (Obsidian "T" II Thermal core) "Utilizing high-resolution sensor with distinct night vision capability" (operating at a frame rate 30hz). Also, now that ATN stop using the FLIR for the new ThOr-HD line, what company make the "Obsidian "T" II Thermal core"? are they made by ULIS (French),
From Eddie on Mar 13, 2016
Answer
Hi Eddie. What you wrote is correct. Obsidian does not stand for thermal specifically it is just the operating platform. That's what provides all the smart features like wireless connectivity, video recording, etc. Digital night vision and thermal sensors are then connected to this platform depending on the type of device we are looking at. We were told that though the units currently operate at 30hz they are capable of 50hz. This seems (we are not sure) to be a software issue which is limiting the refresh rate and is likely to be addressed in a later firmware upgrade. As for who makes the actual thermal core, we do not know at the moment. We will try to find out but you can also contact ATN directly. Please let us know if you have any further questions.
Question
What is your best price for an ATN Thor 640 2.5-25 thank you Blake
From Blake byram on Jan 08, 2017
Answer
Hi Blake. How quickly do you need the thermal scope. If you are open to waiting we may be able to offer a larger discount. Please respond and we will get back to you with pricing.
Question
Comparing the x25 model vs the x50 model there is a considerable difference between the detection/recognition/identification ranges between the two models. Is this solely due to the difference in their zoom/magnification or is there something additional internally on the x50 model that gives it the significantly greater distances? The sensor, core and other internals appear to be the same.
From Jason on Feb 22, 2017
Answer
Hi Jason. The big difference is due to the size of the objective lens. In thermal scopes a larger lens allows for increased amount of information to be collected by the scope and provides greater range as a result.
Question
Can the Thor scopes be used during the day, or are they only for night?
From JustJeff on Mar 21, 2017
Answer
Hi Jeff. Most certainly, ATN ThOR like any other thermal riflescope can be used at any time of the day or night.
Question
is the objective lens size on a thermal the same as a reg. Scope? Let's more light in? Also I'm going back and forth on the 320 and 640 for the atn Thor. Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks y'all
From Michael on Sep 03, 2017
Answer
Hi Michael. The larger the objective lens on a thermal, the more "thermal information" it is able to receive and process. This increases the effective range of the unit. as far as 320 vs 640 goes, it all depends on your specific application. Naturally 640 will provide a smoother image, however 320 is adequate for many hunting scenarios. If you provide some information on what you hunt and how far, we will be able to provide a more specific advice.
Question
Has ATN came out with software update that bring the refresh rate up to 50Hz yet?
From Kevan on Oct 20, 2017
Answer
Hi Kevan. you can monitor their releases for all thermal and digital scopes and binoculars on this page: https://www.atncorp.com/firmware . Each update has details for what is included.
Question
What is the largest caliber this scope can handle. Will is function properly on a semi auto 338 Lapua without messing up the scope? If not can you recommend another scope in a similar price range that will work better
From Luke on Nov 23, 2017
Answer
Hi Luke. ATN ThOR-HD thermal riflescopes are rated for a .308 to my knowledge. We can certainly have a call and discuss other options if need be. Just let us know the best number to contact you at.
Question
Is this still just 30hz or have they gotten it updated to 50 ?
From Keith on Nov 27, 2017
Answer
Hi Keith. ATN Thor HD is still at 30hz at this point I beleive.
Question
your ThOR-HD 640 2.5-25x50 is over 2000 $ more than one at optics planet , is this some special moder or what ?
From goran on Apr 01, 2018
Answer
Hi Goran. We were actually in the process of applying price updates released by ATN for this spring. However, the price OP is offering is significantly lower than the price ATN requires us to advertise. This usually means that they are cleaning out their inventory of display or returned units. In either case, we will certainly price match as we promise if you are interested in placing the order with us. We only have 1 unit left in stock at the moment so I do suggest placing the order ASAP if you are interested. If you pay via check or money order, we can even split the credit card processing fee with you which will save you a few more bucks.
Question
Can you use a ir targeting Lazer like what the military has ? And I have the thor HD 5-50x100 . The scope has a 1913 rail on the left side for like a range finder . Do I need one for my scope ?
From Chris C. on Apr 30, 2018
Answer
Hi Chris. Thermal scopes do not pick up IR light light night vision scopes do. In terms of a rangefinder, it all depends on how you hunt. We have lot of customers who do not use them and we have many who need longer range shots and don't want to guess on the ballistic adjustments.
